The Faculty of Chemistry and Biology and the Faculty of Science at the University of Santiago, Chile (Usach) have announced the inaugural winners of the Women Up R&D grant. This initiative is spearheaded by the Female Leadership and Participation Axis of the Science 2030 project, under the Science Up Consortium, to foster gender equity in high-level scientific research.
The first FIU Usach Workshop: Articulating Capacities in R&D&I, held on Thursday, July 17, saw a strong turnout from the research community at the University of Santiago, Chile. Hosted by the Vice-Rector's Office for Research, Innovation, and Creation, the event successfully brought together academics from diverse faculties and research centers. This initiative created an important interdisciplinary space, fostering the development of collaborative projects aimed at tackling Chile's strategic challenges
Each month, director Ivo Saviane hosts a “director's dinner” at the La Silla Observatory. Recently, he invited Jacqueline Morey, executive director of Planetario Usach, to participate. The event provides an opportunity for the European Southern Observatory (ESO) team to learn about the work of scientists, artists, and astronomers.
As an opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge, international experts from IDEA-Usach and Flacso Ecuador met to analyze the regional contingency in light of the new scenarios of the dominant powers in the international system and their influence in Latin America.
On this occasion, the event was honored by the visit of researcher Ernesto Vivares, Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Sheffield, UK, who specializes in international political economy of development, development financing, and Latin American regionalism.
The ESUS team was founded 15 years ago by former student Gonzalo Pacheco, who had the foresight to create a solar car when discussions about new energy matrices were just beginning. From that initial model, four more were developed until 2018. Then, new generations embraced the challenge, adapting to the evolving needs of the industry by designing electric cars, which opened the door to participating in "Formula SAE." In this new context, the ESUS team took on the demanding task of designing a racecar, complete with all the intricate mechanical and electrical components involved.
In the first semester of 2025, a team of fifth-year students transformed a 1997 Suzuki Super Carry into a mobile carpentry workshop. This vehicle, owned by architect and former professor Willy Muñoz’s father, is destined to bring hands-on learning to children in Villarrica and the surrounding Araucanía Region.
“Technology as a bridge to human dignity” is the name of the talk presented by Carolina Bonacic, director of Strategic IT at Usach and the Center for Innovation in Information Technology for Social Applications (CITIAPS), at the start of the eighth edition of Protagonistas 2030.

As part of the Teaching Innovation Project, “Virtual mentoring platform for women entering the telecommunications technology career: An inclusive and collaborative solution to support professional development and gender equality in the technology industry,” a report was developed for Professor Patricio Ayala’s Management course.
Hosting the tenth Annual Conference of the International Association for the Philosophy of Time (IAPT) from July 7-9, the University of Santiago, Chile, established itself as a global hub for the subject. The three-day event, which took place at the Center for Postgraduate Studies and Continuing Education (Cepec), gathered leading specialists to explore the nature, perception, and physics of time—an age-old enigma that has captivated human thought for centuries.
With the aim of strengthening strategic collaboration between academia and defense institutions, the University of Santiago, Chile, through its Vice-Rector's Office for Research, Innovation, and Creation (VRIIC), presented its institutional model for R&D&I&E at an innovation seminar held at the Chilean Air Force (FACH) Space Directorate.
