U-Sensing: Usach Innovation Transforms Global Mining

Currently operating with Codelco and successfully implemented in companies such as Caserones Lundin Mining and Teck Quebrada Blanca II, this real-time multivariable sensor is making a significant impact. Its innovative design has attracted interest from mining companies in Peru and Australia, cementing its status as a leading technological solution worldwide.

The Chilean mining industry faces major challenges in improving the efficiency of its processes and optimizing mineral recovery. In this context, U-Sensing, a science and technology-based spin-off founded by academics Dr. Miguel Maldonado and Dr. Alfredo Artigas from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Santiago, has positioned itself as a key player thanks to its innovative technology and outstanding position as a technology provider for mining.

The core of U-Sensing’s offering is an innovative real-time multivariable sensor deployed within the pulp-foam interface of large flotation cells. This device provides critical real-time data on mineral pulp characteristics, including density, viscosity, and gas concentration, which facilitates enhanced precision and efficacy in process control.

The U-Sensing sensor stands out because it allows for real-time data acquisition without requiring a process shutdown for installation. Its non-nuclear technology further enhances personnel safety, making it highly attractive to major mining companies. This dual benefit has sparked considerable interest not only in Chile but also in international markets like Peru and Australia.

From Lab to Market

With the support of the Vice-Rector’s Office for Research, Innovation, and Creation at the University of Santiago, through its Innovo Usach Business Incubator, U-Sensing has evolved from an innovative idea to a commercial product, in a synergy between academic research and industrial development that is key to achieving success.

U-Sensing’s big leap forward came when it was accredited as Codelco’s sole technology supplier. The success of this implementation led to U-Sensing’s technology also being transferred to mining companies such as Caserones Lundin Mining and Teck Quebrada Blanca II. “This growth confirms the robustness and versatility of the solution developed by U-Sensing,” says Dr. Alfredo Artigas, also a founder of the company.

Poised to be a benchmark in global mining technologies, U-Sensing’s innovation has already drawn interest from large mining companies in Peru and Australia. Its founders are convinced their technology has vast potential for further expansion. Alfredo Artigas explains their driving force. “Our mission is to create world-class technology for the mining industry, primarily copper.” Dr. Miguel Maldonado reinforces this, stating, “The international interest we’ve generated has fueled our motivation to take our innovation to new frontiers.”

U-Sensing has been highlighted by Codelco as an example of open innovation and also by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation as a successful university spin-off. Recently, the Alta Ley corporation selected U-Sensing to be part of its 2025 Export Mining Supplier Portfolio and invited the company to participate in the Expomin Innovation Pavilion.
