Since mid-April, Danilo Átila, a master’s student in Food Science and Technology at the Federal University of Goiás (Brazil), has been doing a research internship at the Polymer Laboratory of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology, under the guidance of Dr. Paula Zapata, thanks to full funding from his university.

As a guest student until September, his time at Usach is part of his master’s program in Chemistry. He chose Usach due to the prestige and proven track record of both the university and the academic overseeing his work in Chile.

“My search for Chilean universities suitable for an internship led me to Professor Paula Zapata, a highly regarded researcher. Additionally, the laboratory facilities proved to be perfectly equipped for my research endeavors,” the student stated.

The project he is undertaking focuses on red jambu (Syzygium malaccense), a native Brazilian fruit with significant productivity potential. Átila’s goal is to “explore it from seed to peel,” aiming to uncover new knowledge about this plant species’ possible uses and applications.

“During his stay, Átila has appreciated both the academic rigor and the warm atmosphere of the Faculty. “The reception has been excellent. People are very kind, welcoming, and collaborate effectively,” he said.

“There are diverse ways to research and approach topics, which is enriching,” he added.

Lastly, the Brazilian student spoke to the cultural aspect of his time in Chile. “It’s not solely about scientific work; I’m also gaining insights into Chilean culture and the Spanish language,” he concluded.
