El vicedecano de Investigación y Postgrado de la Facultad de Administración y Economía de la Universidad de Santiago de Chile, Dr. Pedro Jara Moroni, le saluda atentamente y tiene el agrado de invitarle a un nuevo Seminario de Investigación de la FAE.
En esta oportunidad, participará Philip Brock, doctor en Economía por la Universidad de Stanford y profesor asociado del Departamento de Economía de la Universidad de Washington, presentará su trabajo de investigación denominado “Golden Nuggets: The California Gold Rush and the Creation of the Banco de Valparaíso, 1855”.
Abstract: The discovery of gold in California in 1848 marked the beginning of a decade of rapid growth in the Chilean economy. The port city of Valparaíso became the first Pacific stopover for gold seekers from the United States and Europe traveling to San Francisco. The surge in economic activity placed increasing pressure on the existing monetary system, and in 1854 a group of merchants in Valparaíso proposed the creation of the Bank of Valparaíso to the Chilean government. This initiative led to major legal reforms that made the bank’s establishment possible in 1855. The study documents the historical process that culminated in the bank’s creation and, from the perspective of economic theory, examines the challenges the government faced in establishing a legal framework acceptable to the merchants of Valparaíso.
