German Expert and Usach Academics Discuss Gender Gaps in School Mathematics

With support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Dr. Claudia Vargas Díaz and a research team from our University's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science participated in an initiative for international cooperation in teacher training, specifically for the field of Mathematics Education.

On August 1, 2024, the online newspaper El Mostrador published an opinion piece by Dr. Andrés Navas, an academic at the University of Santiago, Chile, entitled “Mathematical autopsy of Maduro's results: 99.99999% fraud.”

The text presented an arithmetic and probabilistic analysis that utilized figures to demonstrate how percentages were manipulated to match the number of votes cast, concluding that this numerical exercise in the Venezuelan elections would have been crude and traceable.

Felix Klein Center and Mineduc Launch Second Project to Close Math Learning Gaps

The closing ceremony for the first version of the Matemática en Ruta Program took place at the San Luis Elementary School in Maipú. The event served to symbolically deliver the Evolutionary Learning Networks (REAM) and promote the use of Elementary Teaching Situations, marking the completion of the program’s inaugural phase.

Math Education Expert Excelled at South Korea Conference

Dr. Claudia Vargas Díaz from our University's Faculty of Science proudly participated in the 9th ICMI-East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education, which took place in South Korea from July 18-22, 2025.

The international forum was organized by renowned researchers from the Korean Society of Mathematics Education (KSME) and the Korean Society of Educational Studies in Mathematics (KSESM). Its central theme was the essence of mathematics education in the era of digital transformation.

Academic to Represent South America in Prestigious Global Project

Dr. Claudia Vargas Díaz, a researcher at our university's Faculty of Science, has been nominated as the only specialist in South America to develop an important project for the US National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

Pablo Salas’s Historic Archive Finds Home at University of Santiago, Chile

This week, the Usach Heritage Archive made a significant announcement for our university’s cultural heritage: it has received the audiovisual archive of filmmaker Pablo Salas, who became the foremost documentary archivist of the dictatorship’s dark period in Chilean history.

Having completed his secondary education at Instituto Nacional and studied civil and mechanical engineering, the photographer, producer, and documentary director then joined Teatro Ictus’s newly formed audiovisual production company.

Scientists Develop Recyclable and Compostable Food Packaging as Plastic Alternative

In response to the global environmental problems caused by plastic waste, the Corfo Challenge projects 23RIEYES-247902 “Validation of a prototype cellulose-based packaging with low moisture absorption, compostable and/or recyclable, suitable for direct contact with food” and Fondef ID24I10225 “Development of a prototype of grease- and moisture-resistant cardboard coated with compostable and recyclable renewable natural products” have emerged to provide concrete answers to the industry, which has turned its attention to renewable, compostable, and recyclable cellulosic materials.
